A Healthy Breakfast

I mentioned in a recent article that I would talk about smoothies.  I picked up on this years ago from my mom when she started to do breakfast smoothies a few times a week.  I’ve learned more about nutrition over time, I’ve gotten really into it, and try to have a smoothie for breakfast, or at least as part of my breakfast, everyday.

Everyone should be eating a lot more vegetables, and most people should be eating more fruits. I’m such a fan of smoothies because its such an easy food that enables us to eat the right things.  We should not be eating hardly any standard grains and sugars, and should be eating much less milk, corn, soy, etc. (typical breakfast foods).  Smoothies also allow for experimentation with various superfoods

We should be eating loads of vegetables, a fair amount of quality meats, some fruit, nuts, and seeds.  Smoothies allow us to pack in most of these first thing in the morning – saving money and eating healthier everyday – and avoiding biscuits, cereal, bagels, toast, processed granola bars, fake eggs, and other cheap convenient breakfast items. By buying everything you need in bulk whenever you can it becomes very economical to eat breakfast every morning.

So here is a basic blueprint for what you’ll need for cheap, easy to make smoothies.

  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Banana
  • Strawberries – I get the big frozen bag, but any will do
  • Blueberries – and/or other dark berries. Most are very healthy
  • Another fruit – Apple, pears, citrus, mango, peach etc
  • Yogurt – high fat, high probiotic, low or no sugar, no “light”
  • Almond milk – unsweetened, or try coconut, flax, or cashew
  • A few pieces of ice gives it a nice smooth finish and cool refreshing feeling

Those are the basics.  The point is plenty of veggies and just enough of the rest to make it really tasty.   Here are some ideas for additional ingredients.

  • Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Spinach
  • Bell pepper
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Chia Seeds
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric
  • Honey

You’ll need a blender, cutting board, and a knife.  Just chop it all up into reasonable pieces, throw it in, blend it up, and enjoy!
